Caring For Your Cabinetry

Candlelight’s products are designed to withstand the demands of daily use without requiring any special care. To keep your cabinetry looking great for years to come, consider the following recommended care practices.

Cabinet Exterior: Cleaning and Dusting Cabinets

Regular cleaning is key to keeping your cabinets looking their best. Follow these simple cleaning steps:

  • Dust regularly. Use a damp cloth when dusting your cabinets to avoid scratching the surface. Dry dusting can cause damage if grit is present.
  • Use the right cloth. Microfiber towels in the 600-700 GSM range are ideal for reducing surface scratching.
  • Follow the grain. Always dust in the direction of the wood grain to prevent fine scratches from forming.

When it comes to cleaning, avoid silicones, waxes, or polishes, as they can damage the cabinet’s finish. Instead, opt for a mild detergent like Dawn mixed with warm water. Once clean, dry the surfaces immediately using a soft cloth.

Drawers and Interiors: Keeping Them Clean

Candlelight’s drawer slides and hinges are built to last, requiring no additional lubrication or maintenance. The interior surfaces of your cabinetry are easy to clean with these tips:

  • Shelf surfaces. Depending on your cabinet’s construction, the shelves may feature either a vinyl-clad or urethane-coated surface. Both materials can be cleaned easily with a few droplets of dish soap and warm water. Use a microfiber cloth for a gentle clean.
  • Be mindful of water. When cleaning the interiors, avoid using excessive water that may seep into the joinery, as it can lead to long-term damage.

Horizontal Surfaces: Protecting Your Wood Tops

If your cabinets feature a finished wood top, there are a few tips to preserve its beauty:

  • Avoid sliding items. Instead of sliding objects across the wood, pick them up and gently set them down. Sliding items can cause scratches.
  • Protect from water damage. Ensure that plants are in pots that do not seep water, and prevent leaves from touching the wood. Water can stain or damage wood surfaces if left unchecked.
  • Use coasters and hot pads. Place coasters under glasses and hot pads under cookware to avoid moisture rings and heat damage.
  • Avoid synthetic materials. Rubber, plastic, and printed materials can damage the finish. Rubber and plastic contain chemicals that may degrade the finish, while ink from printed materials can transfer into the wood surface.
  • Keep kitchen appliances that produce heat off finished surfaces. This includes items such as toasters, coffee makers, and air fryers. Excessive heat can damage the finish, leading to warping or discoloration over time.

Basic Care Tips:

  • Keep cabinets dry. Wipe up spills, splatters, and water spots as soon as they occur.
  • Use the right cleaning tools. A soft, lint-free cloth is best for cleaning. Avoid dishcloths or sponges, which may contain grease or detergent remnants that could harm your cabinetry’s finish.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals. Steer clear of products containing bleach, ammonia, or abrasives, as well as scouring pads, steel wool, and powdered cleaners. These can scratch or discolor the wood.
  • Keep oven cleaners away. Never let oven cleaners or similar harsh chemicals come into contact with wood surfaces.
  • Minimize moisture exposure. Avoid draping damp cloths or dish towels over cabinet doors and hardware. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause permanent damage to the finish and the wood itself.
